This site is dedicated to the memory of Laura Fulghum.

I met Mrs. Laura Fulghum in the fall of 1980. I was a foreign student then and spoke very little English. I lived in New Orleans as a guest of her daughter, Laura Cohen. Mrs. Fulghum came to visit for few days, and we met. She was so kind to me, and since her grandchildren called her “Grandma”, I did too. So grandma and I spent time together cooking dinner every time she came to visit. She still had a great memory then. She told me of her youth, and her experiences living in America during times of war. She told me of the beliefs and standards of young people back then living frugal lives. She told me of the difficulties that American families had to endure during those times. So little by little I learned from a witness’s perspective a great deal of American History. She was a wholesome woman, the kind we only read about now. She was charitable, loving, involved in the current issues, and caring with all her children and extended families. She also worked in the school system when she was younger, and was a great asset to her husband, whom we all called “Grandpa”. I remember how they always used to kiss each other hello, it was endearing. She read a great deal, sewed beautiful clothes, served in her church and was a devout Catholic. Since I was a member of another Christian church, we discussed many issues of religion with respect and consideration for each other. I remember when the Pope Jean Paul II visited New Orleans. She came to visit and enjoyed that time so much. She was a gracious hostess throughout all the holidays in her house in Pensacola, every year there were more children. Her son even brought several of his dogs!…But Grandma kept everyone in order and when we all left, I remember her big front yard starting to get empty as all the vehicles departed. Thank you grandma for the example you were in our lives. We love you and hope to see you again, sweet dreams. Carmen Morales
